The Crayon d’Or 2017

In light of the success of the Biro d’Or competition, we have decided to run a parallel competition – the Crayon d’Or – which celebrates the lesser-known and marginalised voices within the football writing world. In order to enter, the following criteria must be adhered to:

  • The nominee must not be salaried by a mainstream media outlet – they may be freelance and paid for their work, however.
  • Each nomination must come with a writing sample which will both allow the voters to make informed decisions on their selection but will also give exposure to the work of these writers.
  • You may nominate yourself.
  • Please stick to football (soccer) writing.

We will collate all of the nominees on this page along with their piece of sample writing. Having done this, we will whittle the nominations down to 32 and the competition will begin.

This competition is all about the celebration of football writing. In this country in particular, the field has been reduced to a kabal of straight, middle-class, white males. Whilst we will still encourage nominations from this demographic, we are keen for your nominations to come from without this narrow grouping. As a result of its lack of variety, sports writing in the UK is in danger of writing itself into oblivion. We need to diversify or we will die the death of banality in the name of protecting the already powerful…

Enjoy!

A Team of John O’Sheas
